It's been a busy year for Odyssey Sea Adventures. We’ve had some great captures, contributions to science swabbing and tagging programs, a new skipper, a new boat and a PB for me!
The fishing in West Wales still never fails to amaze. The reefs offer an abundance of fish of many different species. Some superb pollack fishing was had from March-November, with excellent numbers of fish up to double figures including a bonus tope on SPJ gear! I got in on the action, finally catching my reef nemesis, a beautifully coloured cuckoo wrasse.
The later half of the year proved to us that the numbers of tuna in the waters of the Celtic Deep has increased so the chance of Tuna, Blues and Porbeagles on the same day is possible. The best of the year was circa 800lb and another 5 over the 500lb mark. To hook up these monsters both on dedicated tuna trips and on our mixed trips. It provides further evidence just how world class the fishing is off the west coast of Wales.
On a personal level, the most exciting part was to see Emma complete the qualifications for her commercial endorsement. I'm super proud to see her on the helm, running trips on Odyssey single handed as well leading the charge on our new addition, Ocean Odyssey with me as crew for shark trips. It can be a male dominated profession but that hasn’t stopped her in the slightest! It also allows me more chances to get few trips on the SPJ gear too!
As we look forward to 2025, we hope for more of the same with a few extras! We will continue to offer a wide range of trips with a greater number of available dates, including some dedicated wildlife trips to make the most of our amazing encounters with whales, dolphins, gannets, porpoises, puffins, the list is long! We will continue to support the scientific community with more tagging and swabbing of sharks where possible.
Overall, we are looking forward to getting back out on the water and make memories with all our customers!
July! After what seemed to be never ending poor weather, the summer is finally here!
Milford Haven is bustling with summer life, with Yachts going out for day cruises, families enjoying the summer carnival, food festival and craft fair and others fishing off the Mackerel Quay whilst watching many set off on a day of adventure from the Mackerel Stage.
For us, the summer also brings changes. The fish are increasing in numbers and excitement is steadily building. Our shark tagging and swabbing is well underway and we're awaiting the imminent start of the Tuna season which, not just our skipper Luke, is excited for.
Our new boat, Ocean Odyssey took her maiden voyage a week or so ago. She opens the door to greater opportunities to explore the wonders of the deeps throughout the year.
Odyssey will spend much of her time around the Pembrokeshire coast with speed and comfort, delivering an unbeatable view of our national park, from the sea. In the coming weeks, she'll be taking wild swimmers for a dip in places unreachable by foot, and reefing trips around our stunning islands and The Smalls Lighthouse.
Summer truly is the best time of year to be in Milford Haven and the sense of adventure it instils is infectious.
If you're looking to escape the urban life for something just a little wild, check out our Trips and Contact Pages for more information and if it's not listed, we're happy to create an adventure around you.
